From Representative to Manager: A story of career success

Andreea Dascalu

Area Sales Manager
Romania

Back in 2016, Imperial Brands was establishing its presence in Romania. At the same time, a new employee, Andreea joined our team. As she approaches her 10th anniversary, her career mirrors the growth of the local organisation itself. From Trade Marketing Representative to Sales Manager, she’s found success by learning the dynamics of the market, collaborating with teams and embracing her constant desire to grow.

You joined Imperial Brands during its early days in Romania. What was that like?

It was a small team at the beginning, but that’s why I was attracted to the company. I saw an opportunity be part of building a business almost from the start. Davidoff has just introduced its newest line of superslim cigarettes, Davidoff Magenta and I wanted to help make it a market leader. But I was joining an industry I wasn’t familiar with, which meant I faced new challenges. Honestly, that ramp up was hard, I had to learn a lot of things about cigarettes, about how they are made, about the customers buying them. But those challenges totally motivated me.

What else motivated you to join us?

I came to a turning point in my career. Before Imperial, I worked as a sales representative in a national FMCG company that was already a market leader. I knew what I could accomplish with that company, but I wanted to be at a place where I could step out of my comfort zone and grow professionally. I also believed strongly in the Davidoff brand and that gave me confidence to take on a harder but more rewarding role.

What were the biggest challenges in those first years?

I had to learn everything, from product knowledge to market dynamics and strategy. I quickly realised that success depended on how well you understood both the customer and the business. There was never a moment when the job felt easy and that’s a good thing.

Trust doesn’t come instantly, it builds over time.

What’s your secret for building trust with customers?

It always starts with a conversation. Trust doesn’t come instantly, it builds over time. I focus on being consistent, offering real support and sharing clear information about our products and brands.

Customers notice when you are reliable and bring your authenticity to the table.

What was it like to step up to a management role?

When I became an Area Sales Manager in 2021, I took on a team of five. It was a big shift, but I never felt out of touch with the work on the ground. I’d been in the shoes of the people who reported to me, so I genuinely understood what their day-to-day looked like. That made it easier to understand what my team needed and how to support them.

Jumping into management is a big transition. What makes you successful?

My strong desire to keep developing, my ambition and my trust in the company. I also think being curious and always looking for opportunities to improve as a manager makes a difference. Progress rarely comes from one big moment, it comes from showing consistency over time.

Who is helping shape your journey along the way?

So many people. My former Regional Manager, our Country Manager and colleagues across all departments. I get the support and encouragement I need to pursue my career goals.

What are you most proud of after nearly ten years?

The team. Results matter, of course, but building a strong, united and resilient team is what I’m most proud of. Seeing people grow, gain confidence and succeed together is incredibly rewarding.

What keeps you motivated after almost a decade?

Nothing ever stands still. The market keeps changing, fresh challenges emerge and there’s always something new to learn. That keeps the role exciting.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career at Imperial Brands?

Believe in yourself. Stay curious. Be open to learning. Imperial Brands is a company built on trust, collaboration and accountability. If you take ownership of your role and collaborate with teammates, you’ll set yourself up for success.
