From Sales Representative to Key Accounts

George Kontakos

Key Account Sales Representative
Greece

George joined Imperial Brands in 2023 as a Sales Representative and was promoted to Key Account Sales Representative in mid-2025. Based in Athens, he manages some of Greece’s largest retail clients. Here, George talks about his career journey, what drives success in sales and why honesty matters more than anything else.

George, you started your career at just 19 years old. What drew you to sales?

I didn’t plan it! My first job was at a tech retailer selling PlayStations and TVs. I wanted to understand how work life feels and I discovered I loved talking to people and helping them find solutions. That experience showed me I had the right skills for sales, being social, listening and building trust.

Before Imperial, you worked in different roles, including hospitality. How did those experiences shape you?

Helping my brother launch his restaurant taught me a lot about responsibility and what it means to run a business. Even though I didn’t stay long, it gave me perspective on how companies think and how important it is to respect and support your team. Every role taught me something useful for the future.

I want to be that person who inspires clients and builds strong partnerships

What attracted you to Imperial Brands?

I was working as a brand ambassador for Pulze and saw Imperial’s sales representatives in action. They were professional, positive, and always had a clear plan. I thought, “I want to be that person who inspires clients and builds strong partnerships.” When the opportunity came, I didn’t hesitate.

How did you get promoted from Sales Representative to Key Account Sales Representative?

For me, the promotion was a recognition of consistency and hard work. Of course, results matter, but it’s not just about numbers. Collaboration, organisation, and honesty are just as important. I always wanted to be the person clients trust, and I worked hard to deliver results while building strong relationships. Timing helped too - the launch of new products gave me opportunities to show what I could do. But ultimately, it was about proving I could handle more responsibility and showing that I was ready for the next step.

What was your experience as a Sales Representative?

Joining Imperial in 2023 was a turning point in my career. As a Sales Representative, my role was all about building relationships and understanding the market. I quickly realised that success isn’t just about hitting targets, it’s about listening, supporting, and being genuine. You can’t pretend to be a client’s friend; you have to genuinely care about their challenges and help them find solutions. That’s how you build trust, and trust drives success.

Every day was different. I worked with retailers across Athens, making sure our products were well represented and supporting them with promotions and merchandising. It was a role that required resilience and adaptability, but it also gave me the foundation I needed to progress. I learned how to manage priorities, communicate effectively, and stay organised—skills that are essential in any career.

What’s next for you?

I’d love to step into a managerial role in the future. My current supervisor is incredible—every conversation with him is like a lesson. He has decades of experience, and I try to learn as much as I can from him. I’m focused on developing my skills, building strong relationships, and continuing to deliver results. When the time comes, I want to be ready.

What advice would you give someone who wants to grow at Imperial?

Be structured, stay focused, and always be yourself. My managers told me the same thing: express yourself and stay true to who you are. That advice has helped me every step of the way.
