A scientific approach to vaping
Public Health England (PHE) has concluded that: “Based on current knowledge, stating that vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking remains a good way to communicate the large difference in relative risk unambiguously so that more smokers are encouraged to make the switch from smoking to vaping.”
In line with PHE and other public health bodies, Imperial Brands Science also believe that vapour products currently offer the best potential as a harm reduction product.
Demonstrating the harm reduction potential of products requires a solid scientific foundation based on robust scientific research. To achieve this, we have developed our scientific assessment framework which is built on a collaborative approach and expertise in different areas of science.
Our findings so far have been hugely encouraging. For example, our aerosol research has shown that vapour products emit far lower levels of toxicants compared to conventional cigarettes; we have demonstrated that blu vaping products contain up to 99% fewer toxicants than conventional cigarette smoke.
Our long-term clinical study assessing the use of the vaping brand Puritane over two years showed that there were no safety concerns in smokers using Puritane. Moreover, the use of the product was associated with a reduction in conventional cigarette consumption and a reduced exposure to chemicals associated with cigarette smoke.
Vapour products have not yet been available long enough to generate epidemiological data, which looks at health impacts in populations of users over decades, and we agree that more research is needed into the long-term effects of their use. However, the findings of our studies so far are an encouraging starting point for future research and give us confidence that vapour products have potential to reduce the harm caused by smoking when smokers switch to our products.
We routinely share our research publicly by participating in international scientific conferences. Our work has also been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
