Celebrating the power of diversity
This year we’ve shared a number of inspiring stories with our employees to highlight the positive impact of diversity and equal opportunity across the organisation.
Our Focus on Diversity week, which kicked off on World Mental Health Day on 10 October, was a dedicated campaign to showcase the contribution of a diverse group of individuals to the business.
The stories, shared on the Group intranet, included the experiences of an employee who took up a role in the packing area of our Tabacalera de García cigar factory in the Dominican Republic almost 25 years ago.
Despite being unable to hear or speak, her dedication has helped her to progress her career at the site, becoming an inspector with responsibility for assurance in quality standards and regulations.
Supporting her development have been her people managers, who have learned to communicate effectively through sign language.
Another story shared was the successful working relationship in the States between a field sales representative with a dyslexia diagnosis and his manager.
The pair have significantly adapted the way they communicate – placing a far greater emphasis on verbal exchanges of information – to ensure he’s in a position to meet all his objectives.
At our Bristol HQ, our employee-led Diversity and Inclusion Forum has continued to raise awareness of key issues throughout the year, hosting events on mental health support and to celebrate female leaders and our LGBTQ+ community.
